There are four main types of electromagnetic radiation that I measure in home environments.

These are electric fields, magnetic fields, radio frequency fields and dirty electricity.

Electrical power supplies, building wiring and appliances are the most common sources of man-made, electromagnetic fields in our living environment.

As implied, the term electromagnetic field consists of two fields: an electric field and a magnetic field. The two go hand-in-hand.

Electric fields are created by differences in voltage: the higher the voltage, the stronger the field. An electric field exists even when an appliance is turned off. It exists as a potential in the wire. A magnetic field however is only created when an appliance is turned on and the current is flowing. It wraps around the electric field and radiates from it, travelling further afield.

One of the main characteristics which define an electromagnetic field is its frequency and its corresponding wavelength. Fields of different frequencies interact with the body in different ways, with the higher frequencies having a more detrimental effect than the lower frequency waves.

Electric and magnetic fields drop off with distance from the source. Mitigation of these fields can include turning off breakers and moving key pieces of furniture away from the source.

Sources of radio frequency fields include all wireless devices and communication systems, such as cell phones, cell towers, WiFi, 5G, cordless phones, smart tablets, smart meters used by utility companies, internet TV devices, baby monitors and wireless or smart appliances.

Radio frequency fields are called wireless radiation because the field is so high that it cannot be contained within a wire. It literally flies off the wire and travels through the air.

5G is only one of many different Radio Frequency Fields. However, it is the highest radio frequency field we are exposed to at this time, other than x-rays, CT scans and things we know to use in moderation.

5G’s max speed is aimed at being over 35 times faster than 4G.

  • 5G stands for the 5th generation of mobile or wireless technology and refers to the signal strength, which affects the speed of the internet.
  • 1G was analog
  • 2G went digital
  • 3G brought web browsing, email, video downloading and smart technology
  • 4G brought higher speeds, quality and capacity, gaming, mobile TV, 3D television and cloud computing.

The best way to lower Radio Frequency Fields from within your home environment is to switch from WiFi to ethernet, if you have not already done so. If this is not an option, then shut down all your computers and turn off your WiFi modem when you go to bed at night and give your body rest from the day’s exposures. Get rid of all wireless objects and turn off all cell phones at night.

If this is not an option, then seek professional advice with an Electromagnetic Radiation Specialist for blocking materials such as bed canopies and wallpapers or paints and how to use them correctly without enhancing other forms of radiation.

Dirty Electricity is a ubiquitous pollutant involving both extremely low frequency fields and RF radiation and refers to electricity that has been transformed or 'corrupted". It is caused by electronics and other electrical devices such as dimmer switches and compact florescent light bulbs that create spikes and surges of electromagnetic energy that travel along power lines and building wiring where only standard 50/60 Hertz AC electricity should be. It is measured as the noise caused by harmonics in an electrical system

DE is possibly the hardest of the pollutants to mitigate

Suggestions include getting rid of the things in your home that cause this, turning off particular breakers at night, and the use of filters that plug into electrical outlets that shunt the noise along the line and out the house. However, not everyone does well with these filters. They tend to increase the magnetic field at the outlets where they are plugged in. As Building Biologists, we first suggest plugging in the filters at the hydro panel before it enters the building wiring.
